We Followed a Star

What are you following—and where is it leading you?

In this message from Christmas in July, we journey with the Magi as they follow a star toward the newborn Christ. Unlike the familiar scenes of shepherds and angels, Matthew’s Christmas story introduces us to unexpected travelers from far away who recognize something sacred and respond with faith, courage, and worship.

The Magi had no map, no certainty, and no guarantee of what they would find. They simply followed the light they had been given. Their journey reveals something important about seeking God: sometimes faith means stepping forward before we know exactly where the path will lead.

In this sermon, Rev. Sarah Harrison-McQueen explores the contrast between the Magi and King Herod. Both hear the news that a Messiah has been born, but they respond in completely different ways. The Magi move toward the light with curiosity and hope. Herod responds with fear and a desire to maintain control.

Matthew’s story reminds us that the gospel has always included unexpected people. The Magi were outsiders, people who were not already part of the covenant community, yet they were drawn toward Jesus. Their journey reveals that God’s grace reaches beyond boundaries and invites seekers from every place to encounter Christ.

When the Magi finally find Jesus, they are overwhelmed with joy. Their response is worship, generosity, and surrender. They offer their treasures, but they receive something far more valuable: an encounter with the living Christ that changes the direction of their lives.

After meeting Jesus, the Magi return home by another route. This small detail carries a powerful message—encountering Christ changes us. We cannot always return to life exactly as it was before. God’s presence invites us onto a new path.

This story invites us to consider what is shaping the direction of our own lives. Are we being led by fear like Herod, or are we willing to follow the light like the Magi? What are the “stars” we are following, and are they leading us toward joy, worship, and a deeper relationship with God?

The Christmas story reminds us that God is still calling people forward. The journey may include uncertainty, detours, and unexpected challenges, but those who follow the light of Christ discover that the path leads to transformation.
